I wish we'd had the chance to meet..... love from your niece Karen, daughter of your ever loving brother William Proud and sister of your nephew James Proud (Jimmy), who was born on the anniversary of the day you so sadly lost your life and who is named after you in both your memory and your honour x

My uncle, John Frederick Barber, brother of my dad and his two brothers, died August 8, 1944,at the Falaise Gap in France. He was a Sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers. My siblings and I never met our uncle John, but we knew him from our dad . We think of uncle John often and remember the ultimate sacrifice he, and so many other young men, made for us. We will never forget you.

You were my grandmother's first husband. You died and she had to move on, but the truth is I think she never got over your passing. I feel a connection to you that I don't yet understand but I will find out more about you, and one day visit you. You died so young and the reality is I would probably not exist if you hadn't - that is hard to reconcile. Rest knowing though that I think often of your sacrifice.
